The only thing I knew about SMACK was that I could get arrested for using it. Today’s innovative version is free with wonderful side effects for your body and brain.

According to Denise Medved, S (strategic planning) M (memory and recall) A (analytic thinking) C (creativity and imagination) K (kinesthetic learning) are the keys to changing the brain and avoiding cognitive decline as we age. As it turns out SMACK is definitely something I could get hooked on. In fact, it’s what I’ve been doing for years. I always knew I felt better when I moved and was engaged in learning something new. What I didn’t realize is that I was firing neurons in my brain that would have a long-term effect on my aging process.

Neuroscience (the science of the brain and how it functions) is discovering that when we learn, we altar genes that change our brain, no matter how old we are. Isn’t that great news?

I’ve included Ms. Medved’s TEDx Talk below. Watch with awe, as she talks about our bad ass brains!

How will you engage and stimulate your brain in the future? I’m writing with my left hand, adding music to my Pilates workout, doing more salsa and maybe even walking backwards — anything in a different way to keep those neurons firing!  Come share your thoughts over on our Facebook page!

Go ahead, get hooked on SMACK. Your body and brain will thank you for it!
