The holidays are a coming. They have a way of sneaking up on us. Why not get a wardrobe jump on it?
Despite that it’s still early and whether or not you have holiday invites, get organized anyway. Being ready will reduce stress around your holiday wardrobe by planning ahead. Whether formal, casual, indoors, outdoors, a restaurant, an office party, a banquet hall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or family gathering, you’ll want to be prepared.

I’ve got your wardrobe back with color and style suggestions to make your holiday wardrobe planning easier.

THANKSGIVING

This is a feasting day, so best to dress comfortably. Jeans, slacks, sweaters, layering, booties, decorative flats! A great time to showcase your colors and style for Fall. However, most of us still like to dress seasonally appropriate so you can opt for dresses or skirts in warmer climates. If it’s going to be colder, the weather will dictate the weight of your sweaters, the materials you choose, and if you need additional layers.

WHO ELSE IS ATTENDING?

Maybe this is the first time all year or in several years that you’ve seen family members or friends. Wearing your best personal colors and style will always make a good impression. Meeting your boyfriend’s family or dining with people you’ve never met? Step it up a bit. If it’s celebrating with your peeps, casual can work, but still put together.

CASUAL VS. FORMAL

Formal is generally much more refined in style and worn in a dark neutral color. For women, it can be a dressy dress, long or short and for a man it’s a suit with a tie. Remember that jewelry, make up and hair style contribute greatly to creating a casual vs. formal appearance. Try to determine ahead of time the attire for the event. Too dressy at a casual dinner will be just as uncomfortable as too casual at a formal event.

HOSTING

As a hostess, you will want to look stylish, yet be comfortable for moving around in the kitchen. Maybe swap out your top before you sit down to dinner.

THANKSGIVING COLORS

Thanksgiving is associated with the rich colors of Fall — browns, rusts, greens, oranges. If you have a color palette, pick color(s) that you will feel good about wearing for this celebrated abundant harvest. If you don’t want to wear an active color, pick a neutral. If you don’t have a personal color palette, refer to the 2022 fall colors for inspiration.

These are the Fall 2022 colors you can find now in the stories. These colors are warm, so make sure you look good in warm colors before purchasing them.

CASUAL OPTIONS

Dressing simply will read casual– jeans, sweater, boots or flats. Comfortable, yet stylish.

STEPPED UP CASUAL OPTIONS

Still comfortable, but a notch up on style. Scarves, fabric, belts, jewelry and a more refined shoe will elevate your look.

SEMI- FORMAL ATTIRE
This is not ball gown attire, it’s more cocktail or semi-formal attire. Do your research and check out the venue for more cues as to how to approach your outfit. A hotel ballroom might inspire a different look than a club, restaurant, hotel or vineyard, for example. Semi-formal sends a message to guests that this is still a special occasion and you should plan to look the part, but it also leaves the door open for a more relaxed approach, wardrobe-wise. For a semi-formal celebration, you can push the envelope with shorter hemlines, bold prints and a fun shoe or boot.

10 TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR HOLIDAY WARDROBE

  1. Make notes of each holiday event you are attending.
  2. Decide what you want to wear that feels right for you and the event. Casual, stepped up casual, more refined or something else. What colors, styles, fabrics, shoes, etc. excite you the most for each event?
  3. Give yourself plenty of lead time, should you need to shop for any missing pieces.
  4. Pull out each garment and try it on for condition, fit, comfort and appropriateness for the event. Is anything missing? Do you have the right bra, lipstick shade, shape wear, shoes, jewelry, hosiery, purse? Does anything need repair, cleaning, scuff marks removed? Note: Start with shoes first, if you don’t have the kicks, the outfit isn’t going to happen.
  5. If weather is a factor, ensure you have the right outer wear and shoes/boots.
  6. Once you’ve narrowed down each outfit, take photos, for easy dressing before the event.
  7. Remember, repeating an outfit is okay. In fact it is encouraged. Shopping your closet supports sustainability!
  8. Happy Dance that your outfits are ready for the holidays.
  9. After each event, evaluate the outfit. Did it work and why? If it didn’t work, and why? Make notes for future reference.
  10. Create a Wardrobe List for anything that you want to add for the future, i.e., a holiday broach, a pair of gloves, a bright nail lacquer, a clutch purse, etc.

My Thanksgiving tribe is a group of artists and creative dressers — both the men and woman. We cook together (yes, my apron is in tow), give thanks together and enjoy the meal of the year in company we love. I don my Thanksgiving outfit knowing it’s going to be stretched at the waist and tested for comfort! And I’m the first one to put on music to dance off the carb coma. I cherish this time of year as it is grace-filled and gives me the opportunity to express my specific gratitude for all the blessings in my life, including my clients. Thank you.

Wishing you a well-planned, comfy and appropriately-dressed, colorful, and abundant Thanksgiving!

To Your Mature Beauty and Style,
