It’s Spring and nature seems to signal that with the profusion of colorful flowers on hillsides, along highways, clinging to bushes of finely-landscaped homes and smiling on apartment balconies. With Spring comes aliveness, vibrancy, and flowers burst through the ground arcing their heads upward toward the warm sun.

I discovered these faceless floral ladies in front of a beautiful blooms store in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The lady on the left smacks of Spring with a shorter fit and flare dress of pink, coral, white and green flowers. While the lady on the right feels a bit more like a languid Summer woman in a romantic off-the-shoulder dress in plentiful purples. I tried to imagine the two different faces and how they would connect with their flowers.

Flowers have been part of my exploration with clients since studying the Suzanne Caygill method of Seasonal Color Analysis and taking Joan Kosmachuk’s course, Finding Your Client in Nature. I’ve spent hour after hour studying the faces of clients, friends, models and anonymous people from stock photos. It’s not just a face, it’s the curve, the line, the energy and the movement! Which of the four lights – sunlight, twilight, firelight or moonlight – is reflected in the flower and will best capture the person? What color quality resonates with them? Is the person sturdy, soft, round, exotic, traditional and which flower has the qualities that would best connect to them? It’s not a literal approach, it’s energetic, and I had to feel my way into it as I experimented with multiple flowers of different shapes, colors, sizes, complexities and compositions. It all must come together to fully represent the person, their facial features, line-of-design and seasonal reference.

For Every Face There is a Flower

Of course there are many flowers for each season and these are only some examples.

Notice the differences in color quality and how each flower has a unique beauty and expression. Some flowers have rounded petals, some have dense centers with fluted edges. Others reach upward, while some drape downward. There are flowers with softer petals and ones with pointy edges. Some flowers emanate a stillness, while others have more movement.

The Spring flower has an open and cheerful quality to it. The softer, more romantic feel is part of the Summer flower. The Autumn flower is dynamic with movement. The Winter flower is associated with elegance and drama.

We all have our flower!

For Every Face There Is A Flower

Zoe Saldana needs no introduction. Here she is with a flower whose color, lines and shape support her presence, energy and personality. The purple orchid connects to her delicacy, and refinement as well as her exotic essence.

The pink coral tulip not only picks up the color of her jacket, but also mirrors the shape of her face and connects to her buoyant energy. She is a Spring Woman!
